Upholstery Buying Guide

BoConcept was built on the Danish philosophy of craftsmanship and uncompromising quality. A lot has changed since our journey began in 1952, but our desire to give you the highest quality remains the same. There are a few key points to ask about when buying furniture.

What Is Right For Me?

The Cover

Fabric & Leather: Check what the Martindale rub test is for any fabric you are buying. This is a standard test showing how many times the fabric can be rubbed before signs of wear and tear show. The higher the Martindale, the higher the fabric quality.

The top layer of a cow hide is the hardest wearing, essential for seating areas and arm rests but preferred all over. Cheaper furniture will use lower layers of the leather and coat it in plastic to give it strength. A good leather will be cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

The Frame

The structural areas of a sofa should be from timber, preferably cold grown Scandinavian timber. Cheap sofas will be stapled together. Better is screwed and doweled. Best of all is steel bolts for structural strength.

The way the fabric or leather is upholstered over the frame is important. Ideally find a design with cushions that can be swapped to extend the life of your sofa. If they can also be reversed, this is even better.

The Fillings

High resilient foam is best for seat cushions as it is very structurally stable, ensuring optimum comfort and a long lifetime. A good foam will feel slightly too firm on delivery and soften over a few weeks of use to the correct level of support.

Back cushions should have channels inside them to keep the filling material in place and reduce compacting.
